Washington, D. C. – Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s proposed budget for the 2014 fiscal year.
“Although not perfect, President Obama’s budget includes modest but important gains for women. We were pleased to see that – although the budget leaves in place several restrictions on public funding for abortion – other abortion-ban riders are modified in favor of women.
“NARAL Pro-Choice America has a longstanding policy of opposing the policy that bans the District of Columbia from using its own locally raised revenues for abortion care. And we commend the president for proposing that Peace Corps volunteers be allowed access to safe legal abortion care in the case of rape, incest or life endangerment.
“These policies have hurt so many women over the past four decades. We’re pleased to see that the president addresses these two unfair bans, and we will continue working to ensure that all women have access to the care they need.
“The budget also includes modest increases for Title X family-planning and U.N. family-planning programs which reflect how important these services are to women and families around the country and the world. We welcome these and the other important pro-choice recommendations in this budget.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
