Pro-Choice Champions Fight to Lift Unfair Abortion Restrictions Overseas

Washington D.C. – Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, applauded Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) for introducing two critical pieces of pro-choice legislation this week.

“Thanks to the work of our champions, Sens. Gillibrand and Lautenberg, women serving our country abroad can rest assured that they are not forgotten here at home,” said Hogue. “These bills represent an effort to lift unreasonable bans that have blocked women serving abroad from getting the same reproductive-health care we have been afforded stateside. At a time when seven in 10 Americans support a woman’s right to choose, removing these obstacles for those who selflessly serve our country just makes sense.”

Earlier this week, Sen. Gillibrand introduced the Military Access to Reproductive Care and Health (MARCH) for Women in the Military Act, legislation that would lift the ban on women in the military from using their own, private funds for abortion care services. Her colleague, Sen. Lautenberg, introduced the Peace Corps Equity Act, a bill that would add life, rape and incest exceptions to the ban on abortion for Peace Corps volunteers—a measure supported in President Obama’s proposed FY’14 budget.

NARAL Pro-Choice America has a longstanding policy opposing all discriminatory restrictions on abortion coverage, especially but not limited to those affecting women who get their health insurance through the government.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
