WASHINGTON, DC – Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue announced the Choice Out Loud short story contest for young people ages 18-30 years old.

“There’s been a renewed call for stories of real people facing real choices in their reproductive lives in the wake of a legislative session where attacks on choice have been front and center. We know that young women and men have a unique and 21st century take on reproductive freedom and their voices and experience are critical in the conversation about what our policy landscape should look like to meet their needs,” said Hogue. “Our hope is that this opportunity to share stories will help catalyze a meaningful dialogue on critical issues moving forward.”

The contest, which will remain open to entries through August 30, will feature both fiction and non-fiction essays. The contest offers cash prizes to the winners, who will be chosen by a review panel and celebrity judges. The panel of judges includes popular sex educator and vlogger Laci Green, New York Times best-selling author Maureen Johnson, and President and Executive Director of the Applied Research Center and Colorlines.com publisher Rinku Sen.

“We want to create more opportunities for young people to express their pro-choice values in ways that actually reflect their everyday lives. A story about an unintended pregnancy might also be the story of someone who survives a sexual assault. It might be the story of a volunteer clinic escort, or of a single mother who is struggling to make ends meet. And maybe it’s the story of an LGBTQ person who connects with the issue of choice in a deeply personal way. There are so many unique stories waiting to be told, and we can’t wait to read them.”
