NARAL Pro-Choice America Remembers Dr. George Tiller on the 5th Anniversary of His Death

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 30, 2014

Today, on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the death of Dr. Tiller, NARAL Pro-Choice America released the following statement from president Ilyse Hogue:

“Five years ago, Dr. George Tiller was gunned down in his place of worship. His murder capped a decade of violence targeting doctors who provide women with critical and constitutionally-guaranteed health care.

Today, we honor his bravery and life’s work along with eight other doctors and clinic workers who have died in the line of duty since 1993. Their legacies inspire and guide in our work to protect and expand the freedom of women and families to make personal decisions about their health care.

This month, the Supreme Court will hand down their decision about whether to uphold the protective buffer zones that exist to protect staff and patients from clinic violence and harassment at abortion clinics, and their decision will have immediate effects on the safety of people in Massachusetts, and potentially other state across the country.

No one should live in fear when going to their place of employment or when seeking the medical care that they need. So we salute, not only Dr. Tiller, but the many women and men who work tirelessly to provide abortion care for those in need despite the intimidating threats that surround them. Their work on the dangerous front lines of this movement shows courage and a conviction that should be admired.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
