NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement today:
“Sen. Cornyn and anti-choice Republican leadership are once again prioritizing their dangerous obsession with banning abortion over the health and welfare of some of our country’s most vulnerable women and families.
The Cornyn amendment, which is portrayed as a compromise, is an accounting gimmick designed to trick people into thinking that anti-choice lawmakers are not moving the goal posts to hurt women. Let us be clear: Cornyn and his supporters are not serving the trafficking survivors this bill is intended to help. If senators vote yes on cloture for the Cornyn amendment, they will deny the survivors of trafficking the ability to make decisions about their own lives and bodies. Many of these women have experienced multiple pregnancies in the course of being trafficked and—robbed of their past—deserve the right to determine their own future.
It is deplorable that anti-choice Republicans are willing to cast aside the rights and freedoms of women and families by denying them the full range of health care they deserve. To add insult to injury, this new move is just a money laundering gimmick that gives more consideration for the ‘conscience’ of human traffickers than it does for the welfare of survivors.
NARAL will be watching the vote on cloture for Sen. Cornyn’s amendment closely and scoring it.”
In addition to releasing the ad, NARAL will launch calls in Missouri and Virginia. These calls will target more than 20,000 voters in Missouri, with more than 47,000 voters reached in Virginia.
