Today, Reps. Barbara Lee and Jan Schakowsky introduced the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Woman Act which seeks to make meaningful policy changes to women’s health and well-being.
In celebration of the introduction of the EACH Woman Act, NARAL Pro-Choice America Senior Vice President, Sasha Bruce, released the following statement:
“The EACH Woman Act removes politicians from the relationship between a woman and her doctor and restores the right to make personal and private medical decisions to women. By eliminating the Hyde amendment with this bill, all women, regardless of income, race, zip code or age would have access to the abortion care they deserve.
As studies have repeatedly shown, reproductive freedom directly translates to economic freedom. Focusing on helping Americans improve our financial situation is long overdue by our elected officials. NARAL Pro-Choice America proudly stands with pro-choice champions who co-sponsored this bill in the fight to restore reproductive and economic freedom to women.”
The EACH Woman Act makes a long-needed change for women and their families, creating two important standards for reproductive health:
- First, it respects that every woman should be able to make her own decisions about pregnancy. If a woman gets her health care or insurance through the federal government, she will be covered for all pregnancy-related care, including abortion.
- Second, it prohibits political interference with decisions of private-health insurance companies to offer coverage for abortion care. Federal, state and local legislators will not be able to interfere with the private-insurance market to prevent insurance companies from providing abortion coverage.
