NARAL: Walker Lied To Wisconsin, Will Lie To The Nation

July 13, 2015

In anticipation of Governor Scott Walker signing into law a new abortion ban and announcing his candidacy for president, NARAL Pro-Choice America released a TV ad and the following statement.

Erika West, Political Director at NARAL Pro-Choice America:

“Before announcing his Presidential run, Scott Walker threw Wisconsin women under the bus to score points with a few right-wing voters in Iowa. It is shameful that he would sign a dangerous abortion ban for this purpose, but it’s not surprising. This is straight from the Scott Walker playbook.

In primaries, Walker touts anti-choice policies to win support from the extreme minority, but in a general election, he shamelessly lies to cover up his record on abortion rights. He lied to get reelected governor last year and he will lie to the nation if he makes it another year in the presidential contest. We’re going to work every day between now and election day to make sure he owns his record and is held accountable.”

The 30-second TV ad, which is part of NARAL’s “Own It” campaign, will run statewide in Iowa on Monday when Walker announces his White House run. The ad is targeting women and will air on CNN, The Food Channel, Hallmark, HGTV, Headline News, Lifetime, MSNBC and The Weather Channel.

According to recent polling, commissioned by NARAL Pro-Choice America, and conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, Walker and other leading GOP candidates’ position on abortion will hurt them in Iowa and New Hampshire.

The poll of general election voters in both states found:

  • In Iowa and New Hampshire, more than 7 in 10 likely voters hold the pro-choice position that government should not restrict women’s access to abortion, even majorities of Independents and Republicans hold this position.
  • Voters overwhelmingly trust women—not politicians—to make the health care decisions that are best for themselves and their families.
  • Iowa and New Hampshire voters reject banning abortion after 20 weeks as a priority, and may punish politicians such as Scott Walker who prioritize it.

You can see the full polling memo here.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
