NARAL pushes moderators to #AskAboutAbortion in tonight’s Democratic debate

Five Debates So Far and Zero Questions on Abortion

Ahead of tonight’s sixth Democratic debate, NARAL Pro-Choice America is calling on the moderators to #AskAboutAbortion, highlighting the fact that there have been no questions on the subject in any of the previous debates. In a post on Medium, NARAL encourages organizing around the hashtag #AskAboutAbortion on Twitter, which many people are already using to show why voters deserve to know how the presidential candidates will defend our constitutional right to choose and expand access to vital health care. This push comes after NARAL sent a letter to the PBS debate moderators earlier this week urging them to #AskAboutAbortion in tonight’s debate.

Amid systematic assaults on nearly every aspect of our reproductive freedoms from state legislatures, the courts, and the anti-choice majority in Congress, NARAL’s post on Medium highlights some of the key questions that American voters want asked about the candidates’ plans to defend access to abortion as president. These questions include how the candidates would respond to an upcoming Supreme Court ruling that could close half of the abortion clinics in the country, the steps they would take to stop the domestic terrorists targeting health clinics in our communities, and how they would push a repeal of the anti-choice Hyde amendment through an intransigent Congress.

An excerpt from the Medium piece:

“A woman’s right to choose is central to the values we hold dear as Americans—the ability to plan one’s future and control one’s own destiny, the power to decide when and if and how to become a parent and start a family.

“The voters deserve a chance to watch Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton race to the top on this issue.

“Protecting a woman’s right to safe, legal abortion, as affirmed in Roe v. Wade, is a central tenet of the Democratic Party’s platform and is held dear by the 7 in 10 Americans, women and men, who support legal abortion and who vote every election cycle. Thankfully, both candidates on this side of the aisle are pro-choice—but let’s hear their specific plans to protect and advance reproductive freedom. We deserve as much.”
