NARAL statement post SCOTUS oral arguments in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 2, 2016

Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, released the following statement after oral arguments on Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt at the United States Supreme Court.

“Today, on the steps of the Supreme Court, thousands of men and women from across America joined together to show that we will not stand silently by while our right to determine our families, our lives, and our destinies is legislated out of existence.

“Hundreds of NARAL supporters drove through the night from as far as Texas and Ohio to demand that this right exist not only for a few – but for every American woman regardless of her zip code or income level.

“Thank you to Stephanie Toti and Nancy Northup with the Center for Reproductive Rights and Amy Hagstrom Miller of Whole Woman’s Health for bravely taking this fight to the Supreme Court today. They are true champions for women, justice and equality.

“Today the Court heard powerful arguments about why abortion access is a critical component of women’s empowerment. They heard what we have always known – that when women have autonomy and the ability to make their own decisions we are stronger as women, families and as a nation.

“It is no coincidence that the vast majority of those standing on the steps of the Court today were pro-choice, reflective of the 7 in 10 Americans who support a woman’s ability to access safe and legal abortion.”
