NARAL statement on SCOTUS action to protect abortion access

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 4, 2016

Today the Supreme Court blocked enforcement of a Louisiana law that could have forced all but one abortion clinic in the state to close.

Said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America:

“Today’s decision temporarily protects Louisiana women from a law that undermines our ability to make our own decisions about our destinies. This action by the court upholds the constitutional right to an abortion regardless of zip code, and the ability for women to make our own decisions about our futures.

“On Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard powerful arguments about why abortion access is a critical component of women’s empowerment. They heard what we have always known – that when women have autonomy and the ability to make our own decisions we are stronger as women, families and as a nation. We’re hopeful that the Supreme Court will uphold the constitutional right to an abortion and allow women the dignity to decide what’s right for us and our families, regardless of where we live. That is what the majority of Americans support.”
