Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, released the following statement in advance of today’s oral arguments in Zubik v. Burwell. This case challenges the critical contraceptive coverage benefit included in the Affordable Care Act, which has made birth control far more accessible to countless women across the country:
“Here we go again. Once again opponents of the Affordable Care Act are suing the government in order to roll back the historic law that has expanded access to health care for millions of Americans and provided most women in this country access to birth control coverage without a copay.
“Today, the Supreme Court faces a choice. Either we will empower women and families by once again standing up for the Affordable Care Act or we will roll back coverage that women are entitled to by law. Women must be empowered to make our own decisions about our bodies— it is not only a fundamental right but also vital to our economic success. No one should have to ask their boss for permission to get the health care they need. Period. We hope that the Supreme Court will agree with that simple statement.”
