With Only 1 Abortion Clinic Left in State, New Law Would Further Erode Womens’ Reproductive Rights
With the Mississippi legislature passing one of the nation’s most extreme abortion bans last week, NARAL Pro-Choice America called on Governor Phil Bryant to stand up for women’s right to access health care and veto HB 519. That bill would ban a safe abortion procedure with no adequate exception for a woman’s health. The entire state of Mississippi has just one remaining abortion clinic and this bill attempts to even further restrict the ability of Americans in the Magnolia State to access their constitutionally protected right to abortion.
In a letter to Governor Bryant this week asking him to veto the bill, NARAL Pro-Choice America president Ilyse Hogue states:
“Most Americans view decisions about pregnancy and parenthood as personal medical matters, especially in cases in which a woman’s health is endangered,” wrote NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue in a letter to Governor Bryant. “While we may not all agree on the issue of legal abortion, we should recognize the myriad opinions and respect that these decisions are best made on a case-by-case, individual basis.”
“Instead of focusing on divisive restrictions like these, we can and should seek a common ground,” continued Hogue. “There is much to be done to improve women’s health in Mississippi.”
After officially receiving the bill, Governor Bryant will have five days in which to sign or veto the bill.
