NARAL applauds Hillary Clinton for addressing crisis of abortion access at tonight’s debate

April 14, 2016

NARAL Led Months-Long Campaign Pushing Debate Moderators to #AskAboutAbortion. After 8 Debates Without a Question on Reproductive Freedom, Clinton Chides Moderators for Not Asking About Crisis of Abortion Access.

After NARAL led a months-long campaign urging the presidential debate hosts to ask the candidates how they will address the crisis of abortion access, tonight Hillary Clinton stepped in where the debate moderators had failed. In tonight’s CNN Democratic debate, Secretary Clinton called attention to the crisis in access in abortion care, the consequences for American women when this crisis goes ignored, and how advancing reproductive freedom is critical to advancing economic equality for women and families. In response to Hillary Clinton’s comments tonight, Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, released the following statement:

“Where the media establishment failed, champion Hillary Clinton stepped in and drew attention to the invisible crisis of abortion access in this country. We’re grateful to and inspired by Secretary Clinton’s strength and vision in insisting that reproductive freedom is central to not only human rights but to women’s economic empowerment, a fact that is too often overlooked in the conversation about economic inequality. Tonight Hillary Clinton proved again why she’s our champion and why we need her in the White House to secure a just future for women and all Americans.”

Over the last few months, NARAL has pushed debate moderators to ask the candidates about their plans to defend abortion access. Organizing around the hashtag #AskAboutAbortion, NARAL and CREDO Action have collected more than 50,000 signatures from Americans who want to hear the candidates debate their plans to defend and expand our reproductive freedoms. Ahead of tonight’s CNN debate, NARAL sent a letter to CNN debate moderator Wolf Blitzer urging him to #AskAboutAbortion.

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
