NARAL congratulates reproductive freedom champion Hillary Clinton on NY primary victory

April 19, 2016

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement in support of Hillary Clinton after her victory in tonight’s Democratic primary:

“Hillary Clinton’s victory tonight is a victory for women across the country because she is the only champion for reproductive freedom in this race. Multiple times over the last week, Hillary Clinton has vocalized the fact that attacks on abortion access aren’t a distraction as her Democratic opponent claims. They’re a clear and present danger to women and families. They need to be addressed head on during debates and in the day-to-day of the campaign trail, and combating these attacks must be a focus of any presidential policy.

“Hillary Clinton understands this. She understands that as women today are criminalized for having abortions, or ‘punished’ for making our own health care decisions, our next president needs to lead the way to protect and expand reproductive freedom. That’s exactly what Hillary Clinton has done. She knows that women’s rights are human rights, and that expanding reproductive freedom means breaking down barriers for women.

“On the Republican side, Donald Trump’s victory among the base is no surprise as he’s fully embracing the Republican party worldview where women should be shamed and blamed for their decisions. In a country where 7 in 10 Americans support legal abortion, this won’t help him or any Republican win the White House.

“We can’t advance women’s rights and reproductive freedom unless we have a true champion in the White House. That champion is Hillary Clinton, and we’ll keep fighting for her.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
