NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement in support of Hillary Clinton after she secured the Democratic nomination in tonight’s primaries:
“Tonight, we hear one more glass ceiling break as Hillary Clinton cinches the nomination for president. Since the very beginnings of this country, trailblazing women have led the way to make America great again and again. From Harriet Tubman to Helen Keller to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, women across generations have propelled this country forward and fought for a better tomorrow. And tonight, we celebrate another milestone: the first woman in U.S. history to win a major party presidential nomination.
“This is a moment our mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers have been working toward and one our daughters and sons will always remember. Secretary Clinton’s victory tonight is a victory for all women because she is the model of a true champion for reproductive freedom. She understands better than anyone that our nation is facing an assault on abortion access, on contraception that is a proxy for an assault on women’s autonomy and empowerment, on nothing less than our ability to live the lives we choose. She understands that for women and families to succeed, we must protect and expand access to reproductive health care and we must trust and respect women’s personal decision making. Anything less does not afford equality.
“Hillary’s championship is why tens of thousands of NARAL Pro-Choice America members have mobilized tirelessly through the primaries to ensure she is our next president. Over the past six months, NARAL members have knocked on thousands of doors, made countless phone calls, and mobilized hundreds of thousands of pro-choice voters to turn out the vote or caucus in support of reproductive freedom and our champion, Hillary Clinton. We’ve made sure voters know just how important it is to turn out and vote for a true pro-choice champion this year. That work has paid offtonight and will continue to build until we win the election in November.
“But we aren’t done yet. The last person we need in the White House is Donald Trump, a misogynist who disdains and belittles women, and even claimed that a woman should be punished for exercising her constitutional right to a safe and legal abortion. In a country where 7 in 10 Americans support legal abortion, his won’t help him win the White House. NARAL will be out in force to make sure Hillary Clinton is our next president—not Donald Trump. #ImWithHer, we’re with her, and we can’t wait to see our champion become the first woman in the White House.”
