NARAL Pro-Choice America today applauded former Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto for her victory in the primary election for U.S. Senate. Endorsed by NARAL, Cortez Masto has always stood up for Nevada families and has fought against attacks on a woman’s constitutional right to safe and legal abortion. She now faces anti-choice Rep. Joe Heck (NV-3) in the general election.
“Catherine Cortez Masto has been a strong ally in the fight for our reproductive freedom and NARAL is proud to stand with her in her campaign for U.S. Senate,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “While her opponent has consistently voted to limit a woman’s reproductive freedom, Cortez Masto will protect Nevadans’ right to safe and legal abortion and ability to choose their own futures.”
“Catherine Cortez Masto’s victory brings us one step closer to electing not only the first Latina to the U.S. Senate, but also someone who has the best interests of Nevadan women and our families in mind,” said Caroline Mello Roberson, Nevada state director for NARAL Pro-Choice America. “NARAL is proud to support Cortez Masto as together we fight for the 7 in 10 Americans who support legal access to abortion. In contrast, her anti-choice oppoent is obsessed with taking away our reproductive rights and has proven time and again that he just doesn’t share the values of Nevada families. That’s why NARAL is mobilizing pro-choice voters across Nevada to support Catherine Cortez Masto’s campaign for U.S. Senate.”
Cortez Masto is running against Rep. Joe Heck (NV-3), an anti-choice politician who has repeatedly voted to restrict a woman’s access to abortion, including voting several times to defund Planned Parenthood. Rep. Heck cast his voted to ban abortion nationwide after 20 weeks of pregnancy with no exceptions for rape, incest, or to protect a woman’s health. He has also worked to limit a woman’s access to basic reproductive health care by voting to effectively ban abortion coverage in state health-insurance exchanges.
