NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC today announced its endorsement of former State Sen. Gail Schwartz in her campaign to represent Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District. NARAL’s endorsement reflects Schwartz’s leadership in standing up for Colorado women and families as well as her commitment to protecting and expanding women’s access to reproductive health care, including abortion care.
“We are proud to stand with pro-choice leader Gail Schwartz in her campaign for Congress,” said Sasha Bruce, senior vice president for campaigns and strategy at NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Having lived on the Western Slope for more than 40 years, Gail has fought for Colorado women and families her entire career. As a leader, Gail has the experience and the grit to take on the tough fights, and will defend our reproductive freedom and expand women’s access to vital reproductive health care, including abortion. That’s the kind of leader Colorado women and families deserve and that’s why NARAL is proud to endorse Gail Schwartz in her campaign for Congress.”
“I am honored to receive NARAL’s endorsement,” said Gail Schwartz. “Today’s Congress poses major threats to women’s reproductive rights, and to the full range of family planning services that women depend on. The record shows there is a distinct contrast on women’s issues between my opponent, Congressman Scott Tipton, and myself. Mr. Tipton has repeatedly supported an extreme agenda—voting to defund Planned Parenthood five times, voting twice to ban abortion after 20 weeks and criminalize physicians, and voting to allow hospitals to deny emergency abortion care. If elected to Congress, I will use my voice and my vote to stand up for the rights and commonsense reproductive health care that women have fought so hard to gain and to protect.”
“Colorado is a pro-choice state, and Coloradans deserve someone who represents their values. Scott Tipton does not – he’s voted for a nationwide ban on abortion, as well as attacking health care providers here in Colorado. Gail Schwartz will fight for Coloradans and our longstanding belief in reproductive freedom, including the right to choose an abortion and access to the full range of reproductive health care. Gail Schwartz is who Coloradans need and deserve in Congress,” said Karen Middleton, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado.
Gail Schwartz is challenging incumbent Rep. Scott Tipton (CO-03)—a vocal anti-choice politician dedicated to rolling back women’s reproductive rights. Since his election in 2010, Tipton has maintained a consistent zero-percent rating from NARAL’s annual rating of Members of Congress. He has voted in support of multiple efforts to defund Planned Parenthood, voted for a nationwide ban on abortion after 20 weeks, and actively pushes anti-choice policies that undermine women’s access to reproductive health care, including abortion.
