BREAKING: Right-wing ideologue will win New Hampshire GOP Senate primary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 13, 2016

Polls are still hours away from closing, but it’s clear that no matter who wins tonight’s GOP primary—anti-choice incumbent Sen. Kelly Ayotte or former state Sen. Jim Rubens—the victor will be an out-of-touch ideologue who doesn’t share the priorities of New Hampshire families. Throughout the campaign so far, both Ayotte and her opponent have made clear they support Donald Trump’s divisive agenda, plan to roll back women’s health care options, and are obsessed with restricting Americans’ access to their constitutionally protected right to obtain an abortion. Because she has legitimized and supported the GOP presidential nominee and his dangerous vision for our country, NARAL has called out Sen. Ayotte for being part of the Trump Squad—a fact that the group will continue to remind voters of this fall.

“Whoever wins tonight’s GOP primary, one thing is clear: the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in New Hampshire will be a right-wing ideologue who doesn’t share the priorities of New Hampshire families,” said Joel Foster, National Political Director of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Sen. Ayotte has spent her career obsessing over rolling back our reproductive rights and limiting our access to basic health care, including multiple votes to defund Planned Parenthood and calling for Roe v. Wade to be overturned. By contrast, Maggie Hassan shares the priorities of hard working Granite State families and will always stand up for Americans’ reproductive freedom.”

Sen. Kelly Ayotte is largely expected to win tonight’s primary and, as a proud member of the Trump Squad, she would enter the general election pushing the backward, anti-choice agenda that she and Donald Trump share. Even though 75 percent of New Hampshire voters oppose restricting access to legal abortion, Sen. Ayotte has focused her energy on restricting our reproductive freedom and access to abortion. In Washington, Sen. Ayotte has voted multiple times to defund Planned Parenthood, supported a nationwide ban on abortion after twenty weeks of pregnancy, and has long fought for Roe v. Wade to be overturned. NARAL recently ran an ad confronting Sen. Ayotte for her misplaced priorities and obsession with trying to ban abortion. NARAL also ran ads highlighting Sen. Ayotte’s refusal to do her job and fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court.
