NARAL Pro-Choice America Senior Vice President Sasha Bruce issued the following response to the Hyde Amendment hearing held today by the anti-choice GOP:
“The anti-choice GOP leadership has their priorities all wrong. With so little time left in session this year, you’d think they’d want to focus on pushing a bill to fund the fight against Zika, or boost job creation. But instead they’re using their resources and little time left in regular session to attack low-income women, women of color, and reproductive rights in general. Despite the fact that 86 percent of Americans agree that politicians should not be allowed to deny a woman an abortion just because she is poor, the anti-choice GOP prioritized this hearing during the last days of session this year.
“We are so proud of Kierra Johnson for her leadership at today’s hearing and for giving a voice to the thousands of women, and especially women of color, most impacted by Hyde every day. It’s clear that the anti-choice men leading today’s hearing don’t have an ounce of respect for women and women of color in particular, and don’t trust us to make our own decisions. Yet despite being subjected to their offensive, bogus questions and comments, she stood strong and made us proud. She’s a true champion for women and we are so proud to follower her lead.”
The Hyde Amendment is discrimination in legislative form. It denies low income women, and disproportionately, women of color, the ability to access the same rights and care that women of means have. To read more about how harmful the Hyde Amendment is, click here.
