NARAL responds to Sen. Burr’s deceptive ads attacking Deborah Ross

September 28, 2016

Misleading Claims Obscure Sen. Burr’s Long History of Voting Against Women, Putting Special Interests Ahead Of NC Families

With Sen. Richard Burr launching a deceptive—and thoroughly debunked—new ad against Deborah Ross and her support for women across North Carolina, NARAL today highlighted Sen. Burr’s ugly history of voting against the interests of women and their families. While Deborah Ross has worked to get things done for working people, Sen. Burr has consistently voted with his party bosses to deny women control over their own bodies and ability to define their own destiny.

“Sen. Burr’s discredited attack ads won’t change the fact that he’s lost touch with North Carolina and doesn’t share the priorities of hardworking families across the state,” said Joel Foster, national political director of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Instead of standing up for women, Sen. Burr has been obsessed with limiting access to contraception, opposing equal pay for equal work, and defunding women’s health clinics. While North Carolinians are concerned about jobs and the economy, Sen. Burr and his big money handlers have pushed an agenda that is out-of-touch with the priorities of women and families.”

“Deborah Ross is a new kind of leader who works to get things done for women and families across North Carolina,” added Foster. “Deborah is focused on working across the aisle to stand up for women, expand access to basic health care, and empower all Americans to define their own destinies. North Carolina families know that Deborah Ross has always fought for them and that’s why NARAL is proud to fight with her.”

Sen. Burr has spent his career pushing policies that hurt women and roll back our reproductive freedom. Sen. Burr voted repeatedly to oppose paying a woman equally for doing the same work as a man. He opposes giving women comprehensive access to contraception, pushed to defund Planned Parenthood, and repeatedly called to ban abortion nationwide at 20 weeks of pregnancy.

NARAL endorsed Deborah Ross’s campaign for the U.S. Senate because she has consistently fought to defend the rights of women and their access to reproductive health care. Year after year, she has championed policies that support women and families and will be the voice that North Carolinians deserve in the U.S. Senate.

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
