NARAL congratulates Chris Van Hollen on his election to the U.S. Senate

Following Rep. Chris Van Hollen’s victory in his U.S. Senate race, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue and NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland Executive Director Diana Philip issued the following statements:

“NARAL is proud to congratulate Chris Van Hollen on his victory in his race for Senate,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Maryland’s next senator will always put women and families first. We know that, as a senator, Chris will protect our right to access the full range of reproductive health care, including contraception and abortion. Chris has always stood up to defend our reproductive rights from partisan attacks, and now he’ll continue this fight on behalf of Maryland families in the U.S. Senate. Congratulations to Senator-elect Chris Van Hollen!”

“Congressman Van Hollen has stood up for abortion providers in Maryland that are being harassed by anti-choice politicians in Congress who are obsessed with limiting—and ending—access to abortion,” said Diana Philip, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland. “He supported the Maryland Contraceptive Equity Act of 2016 to make birth control more accessible and affordable, and he makes the time to engage with pro-choice Marylanders. We are excited that such a strong advocate for reproductive freedom will be representing Marylanders in the U.S. Senate.”

Barbara Mikulski. Van Hollen’s record of standing up for women and families includes fighting back against partisan efforts to smear and defund Planned Parenthood, opposing a nationwide abortion ban at 20 weeks of pregnancy, and taking a strong stance in support of landmark legislation to lift harmful state restrictions on abortion access.
