Progressive Groups to Democratic Senators: Filibuster Gorsuch

Today, as the hearing starts for President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, leading progressive groups have kicked off a campaign to urge Senate Democrats to use every tool available to them—including the filibuster—to block Gorsuch’s nomination.

Led by NARAL Pro-Choice America, MoveOn.org, Civic Action, Daily Kos, CREDO, Ultraviolet, and Progressive Change Campaign Committee are sending their millions of members emails today to get them to call Senate Democrats and urge them to filibuster Judge Gorsuch.

“Judge Gorsuch is not a mainstream nominee. He is more conservative than Justice Scalia and throughout his career has failed to protect everyday Americans’ constitutional rights in favor of propping up corporations and special interests. If his nomination clears the Senate, Judge Gorsuch will be in a position to cement Donald Trump’s dangerous and reckless policies in place for generations to come.

“Our message to Senate Democrats is clear: everything from Roe v. Wade to LGBTQ rights to workers’ rights are on the line. A simple ‘no’ vote is not enough. Our members are counting on Democrats to filibuster this nomination.”

Your senators need to hear from you about Trump’s dangerous Supreme Court pick…

NARAL Member,

I’m going to be honest with you. I’m very worried about the Supreme Court hearings that start today.

Neil Gorsuch is as extreme a nominee to the highest court as we have seen in a generation. He has consistently ruled on the side of corporations over people, including Hobby Lobby—giving bosses the right to decide our birth control. Donald Trump promised over and over on the campaign trail to nominate justices that would overturn Roe v. Wade and Gorsuch appears to fit the bill. He could enshrine the Trump agenda for at least thirty years.

In spite of this, we’re not hearing from enough of the Democratic Senators that they will fight this nomination with everything they have. We need them to understand that simply stating their opposition to Neil Gorsuch is not enough. We need Senate Democrats to filibuster this nomination and demand a nominee who represents the mainstream values of our country.

I joined Elizabeth Warren last week to deliver over a million petitions to the Senate asking them to block this nomination. There’s real opposition out in the country to stop Judge Gorsuch.

Yet, many Senators have not yet taken a position. There’s so much going on—ACA repeal, a new travel ban, a budget that does away with Meals on Wheels. It feels like everything we care about is on the line.

And it is—which is why we need to stop this nomination. The Supreme Court is the final battleground for all of these things. We need Justices who recognize the rule of law as it applies to all people, not just a few. If we don’t fight with everything we have, we will regret it the first time a decision comes down that reinforces Trump’s agenda.

Our freedoms and liberties for decades to come are at stake and we need our Senators to block the nomination.
