Details Fit A Troubling Pattern In Which Trump Attacks Human Rights to Shore Up Base Support
With news that Donald Trump’s is escalating his attack on global reproductive health care access, a clear pattern is emerging in which Trump jeopardizes human rights to shore up his political base. Just days after an FBI scandal that may cause a constitutional crisis, Trump is now ratcheting up his attacks on women’s rights with an unprecedented international expansion of his global gag rule, reportedly applying the standard to programs that receive $8.8 billion in U.S. aid. This action will take critical reproductive care away from women in the world’s most unstable environments. By yet again throwing women under the bus, Trump is making a cynical calculus that he can stop the fringe elements of his base from deserting him as long as he steps up his anti-choice attacks.
“President Trump is treating women’s lives like political bargaining chips, trading them away to shore up his flagging support,” said Sasha Bruce, senior vice president of campaigns and strategy for NARAL. “Barely more than 100 days into his presidency, this pattern of behavior is an ominous portent of things to come for women and our families. A man who was best known during the campaign for disrespecting and objectifying women clearly hasn’t changed his behavior despite wielding even more power.”
