NARAL Calls on Carney to Stand Up For Women, Sign Landmark Bill to Protect Abortion Access

June 9, 2017

In the face of increasing threats to our constitutional right to access abortion, NARAL Pro-Choice America today called on Delaware Gov. John Carney (D-DE) to sign a landmark bill to protect the reproductive freedom of women across the state. The proposal, SB 5, would codify a woman’s right to access abortion prior to viability and finally repeal the state’s unconstitutional bans on abortion that were passed in the era before Roe v. Wade.

“As the country grapples with a possible future where abortion is once again illegal and women who seek them criminals, legislators in Delaware are taking action. This forward-looking bill makes sure that Delaware remains a safe space for women who need abortion care and affirms the state’s commitment to women’s freedom,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “While so many states race to stay ahead of Donald Trump and Mike Pence’s full on assault on reproductive freedom, Delaware shines as a beacon of hope for women, families, and equality.”

As President Trump and national GOP leaders have become increasingly hostile toward women’s constitutional rights, states across the country have begun to pass legislation to proactively protect their citizens’ rights and access to basic healthcare, including abortion and contraception. The governor has 10 days (excluding Sundays) to act on the measure or it becomes law without his signature.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
