NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement in response to the election results in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District:
“The fact that this race was close at all shows that voters are sick and tired of candidates who obsess over restricting access to abortion instead of focusing on the priorities of hardworking families. In a district that elected a Republican by 23 points just seven months ago, this narrow election result proves that momentum is shifting away from the Republican Party and their anti-choice agenda.
“Over the course of this campaign, Karen Handel proved time and again she cares more about her own extreme ideological agenda than the health and security of women and families. Handel’s obsession with defunding Planned Parenthood and her callous attempts to make it harder for women and families to access basic reproductive healthcare were a significant liability in this race—and campaigns across the country have already taken note. NARAL and our more than one million members will continue to hold anti-choice Republicans accountable for their dangerous and out-of-touch agenda.”
NARAL made a six-figure investment in the GA-06 race, airing video ads, sending mailers, and calling voters to reject the extreme, anti-choice agenda pushed by Handel. These issues became a salient point of contrast between the two candidates, and significantly tightened what was initially considered a safe Republican hold.
