NARAL Statement on Women’s Equality Day

(Washington, D.C.) — Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, released the following statement in recognition of Women’s Equality Day:

“Two things have never been more clear: that the power of women across America is a force to be reckoned with and we have to double down in this moment because our equality is on the line. The Women’s Marches–the largest single-day demonstration in American history– showed the appetite in every corner of our country to fight the toxic misogyny we face in all parts of our society, especially in this White House. We saw that appetite translate to victory when we collectively helped defeat efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and pass legislation in the states to expand access to abortion and birth control.

“But the current state of affairs tells us that our work is far from over, and in fact, has never been more important. The threats of the Trump Administration, an anti-choice Congress, and the erosion of women’s protections in the courts, is an even louder calling: we need to double down, we need to keeping fighting.

“NARAL members are and will continue to be at the center of these battles to ensure that reproductive freedom is protected. We will never back down until we are recognized as equal partners in society.

“We are committed to using our mobilizing strength to push back against dangerous, anti-choice legislation materializing in state legislatures across the country. We will hold politicians — including our friends and allies — accountable to the highest standard when it comes to defending our fundamental freedom to decide if, when, and how we start or grow our families. We know that equality for women is not possible without full reproductive freedom, including abortion and contraceptive access, and we will not rest until we realize this vision.”
