NARAL Statement on Betsy DeVos’ Announcement on Sexual Assault Protections

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 7, 2017

(Washington, D.C.) —Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America issued the following statement following Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ speech on changes to Title IX protections for women:

“We’re not surprised that a man who bragged about assaulting women would take action to defend others who do the same. But, it’s always so disturbing to see a woman rob other women of their sense of safety and their protection of bodily autonomy. This Administration can barely get anything done, and yet they continue to find time to erode people’s most basic human right: to be in charge of what happens to their own body. From new mass restrictions on abortion access, banning transgender Americans from serving in the military, and now declaring open season on Title IX protections for sexual assault survivors, this administration has been relentless in their intention to punish anyone not like them. NARAL members will not stop fighting these attacks that hurt our progress towards greater gender equality.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
