After the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing on Alex Azar, Donald Trump’s anti-choice nominee for Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), NARAL Pro-Choice America National Communications Director Kaylie Hanson Long issued the following statement:

“Donald Trump and the anti-choice GOP are using the Department of Health and Human Services to carry out their obsession with eroding reproductive rights. Azar’s clear, anti-choice record makes him an obvious fit for a role in an administration committed to undermining women’s healthcare, including access to abortion. The Senate must stop being complicit in Donald Trump’s backwards, reckless agenda, and reject this nominee. The health, rights, and reproductive freedom of women all across America are on the line.”

Azar’s anti-choice record should concern all Americans. In a speech to the Islamic Medical Association of North America in Chicago, Alex Azar thanked the group for its “emphasis on protecting the health and well-being of the unborn” and stated it was a cause he is “committed to as well.” He is also an outspoken opponent of the ACA and has donated to many anti-choice politicians.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
