Today, incumbent Democratic Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL-03) voted for a right-wing Republican bill to place further, medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion access across the country. This vote continues Lipinski’s out-of-touch, anti-choice record, which was highlighted in a new ad campaign announced this week by NARAL Pro-Choice America. In response to his vote for HR 4712, NARAL spokesperson James Owens issued the following statement:
“This vote tells you everything you need to know about Congressman Lipinski’s out-of-touch priorities. On the anniversary of the Women’s March, Rep. Lipinski is using his vote in Congress to roll-back the clock on our hard-won freedoms. As families in Illinois and across the country prepare to take to the streets in support of equality and fairness for all, Lipinski’s actions prove yet again he doesn’t share our values. That’s why NARAL members are proud to support Marie Newman and to stand with her as she fights to represent hardworking Illinois families in Congress.”
Marie Newman’s campaign to replace anti-choice Rep. Dan Lipinski in the upcoming Democratic primary has been recognized nationally as one of the top races to watch in 2018. NARAL endorsed Marie Newman last year and has been a powerful force behind efforts to help elect a true progressive to represent women and families across Illinois’ 3rd district. NARAL launched a Let’s #DumpDan campaign including a website and TV ad as part of a larger plan to unseat the anti-choice incumbent.
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
