After Republicans in Congress voted on the so-called “Born Alive” bill, an unnecessary distraction and attack on women’s rights, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:
“On a day where the government could shut down, poor children are being robbed of health coverage and young people who have given their lives to this country risk deportation, this irresponsible and shameful GOP is wasting time and taxpayer dollars on their relentless obsession of finding new and innovative lies to rob women of our fundamental freedoms. This bill is a solution in search of a problem. If Republicans care so much about the health of women and children, they are welcome to work with us on policy that insures more people, restore funding to the Children’s Health Insurance Program and do something to address the obscene rates of maternal mortality in this country, especially among black women. We’re here if they want to call about any one of those things, but we won’t hold our breath.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
