After Donald Trump delivered the annual State of the Union address, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s State of the Union comes at a time when his administration is under federal investigation for possible corruption, hundreds of thousands of Dreamers face the threat of deportation, and his own party voted, and failed, to advance an unconstitutional abortion ban he desperately wanted to sign into law. His lack of honesty and awareness about the devastating impact of this administration on women and families in tonight’s address was staggering.
“What Donald Trump did tout is his effectiveness at packing the Courts with activist judges, which has always been his back door way to do what he can’t do in broad daylight: make good on his promise to end legal abortion in our country and enshrine his agenda into the law of the land in our country for generations to come.
“Tonight, he undercut his own claim to the pro-life mantle when he publicly supported attacks on the health and well-being of American women, kicking countless Americans off health insurance, and chipping away at our basic human right to plan our families and care for the children we already have.
“Americans resoundingly reject this president as the most unpopular in United States history. Surrounding him is a changing culture where women are reclaiming our power as equal partners in society, and driving political change at the polls as candidates and voters. The more he presses on with his anti-choice agenda, the less popular he’ll become, especially given that seven in 10 Americans support legal abortion. At NARAL, we’ll continue to hold Trump and his allies accountable.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
