NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of Lisa Brown for Congress in Washington’s 5th Congressional District. She is challenging Republican Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a key member of GOP House leadership, for this Eastern Washington seat. McMorris Rodgers has a zero rating in the most recent Congressional Record on Choice, and has a long record of anti-reproductive freedom votes.
“The women of Washington State need someone who will stand up for their rights in Congress and vote against the Trump agenda,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “That’s why we are proud to endorse Lisa Brown, a true fighter for women and families. Her race is key to establishing a pro-choice majority in Congress, and we’ll fight hard to see her elected.”
“There are some who want to turn back the clock on women’s health and reproductive choice.” Brown said. “This endorsement shows I will defend those rights in Congress.”
“Lisa Brown will be a strong advocate for Washington State women in Congress,” said Tiffany Hankins, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. “Rep. McMorris Rodgers’s votes are in complete opposition to the pro-choice, pro-reproductive freedom values of this state. We will enthusiastically let our members in eastern Washington know they should support Lisa Brown for Congress.”
Brown is an economist and was the first Democratic woman to be state Senate majority leader. She served as chancellor of Washington State University Spokane and was instrumental in starting the state’s second public medical school. She has long record of fighting for women’s healthcare, and will advance reproductive freedom if elected to Congress.
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
