In honor of International Women’s Day today, and in celebration of March as Women’s History Month, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:
“This year’s historic wave of activism and resistance from women who have had enough of being treated as less than equal has changed conversations and catalyzed change in the halls of Congress, the boardroom, the bedroom, and the world. Power comes from the collective, and we know that to achieve equality, we must keep fighting these most worthy of fights around autonomy and respect together.
“In order to be true equals in society, women must have the ability to make their own decisions about their bodies and control their own destinies. Women’s fundamental rights are under attack like never before, both in the U.S. and abroad — from Donald Trump’s expansion of the Global Gag rule, to Mike Pence’s pledge to end abortion ‘in our time’ – and it’s on all of us to speak out.
“That is why NARAL and our members fight so hard to defend these rights every single day. The fight for freedom is never over, and indeed, without reproductive freedom, women are not truly free. On this International Women’s Day, we recommit to doing all we can to create a world in which women are truly equal.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
