Following reports that reproductive rights champion and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY) passed away, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:

“We join Rochester, New York, and people all across the country, in mourning this devastating news. Louise Slaughter was a trailblazer in her unwavering support for women’s rights. Throughout her time in office, she made a lasting impact on the health and well-being of women and families through her tireless reproductive rights advocacy. Our country has lost a fierce champion and beloved leader, but her legacy of expanding reproductive freedom for women and families will live on.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
