Today, NARAL joined partner organizations at a rally in front of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to deliver over 200,000 public comments in opposition to the Trump administration’s new policy that implements a license to discriminate against women and LGBTQ individuals. NARAL Pro-Choice America Vice President of Communications and Strategic Research Adrienne Kimmell issued the following statement:
“This rule gives doctors, nurses, and many other healthcare workers permission to refuse to provide care to anyone they might disagree with, essentially legalizing discrimination in virtually every part of our healthcare system. Imagine a receptionist refusing to schedule an abortion for a woman seeking care, or an ambulance driver refusing to take an LGBTQ patient to treatment in an emergency. No one seeking healthcare should be refused or discriminated against because of another person’s personal beliefs. It’s clear this administration disagrees with the fundamental notion that healthcare providers should put their patients first.
“This rule does a grave disservice to patients and undermines the integrity of the Department of Health and Human Services, which has a critical duty to protect the health and well-being of all people. The Trump administration has repeatedly ignored the responsibility of this department, using HHS to enact its backwards, out-of-touch agenda at the expense of women and LGBTQ individuals. NARAL members will continue to fight back and demand that HHS carry out its duty to put the well-being of patients before ideology.”
At the rally, NARAL was joined by ACLU; Americans United for Separation of Church and State; Believe Out Loud; Catholics for Choice; Center for Reproductive Rights; CenterLink: The Community of LGBT Centers; CREDO; Family Equality Council; Human Rights Campaign; Jewish Women International (JWI); Lambda Legal; Legal Voice; MomsRising; Movement Advancement Project (MAP); National Abortion Federation; National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF); National Center for Lesbian Rights; National Center for Transgender Equality; National Council of Jewish Women; National Health Law Program; National LGBTQ Task Force; National Partnership for Women & Families; National Women’s Law Center; NFPRHA; People For the American Way; Physicians for Reproductive Health; Planned Parenthood Federation of America; Power to Decide; Raising Women’s Voices; Religious Institute; The National LGBTQ Task Force; National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, and friends.
