In response to reports of a new policy change by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to revoke previous policy on the detention of pregnant women, NARAL Pro-Choice America Vice President for Strategic Communications and Research Adrienne Kimmell issued the following statement:

“This policy change is part of an increasingly alarming trend of the Trump administration asserting its power at the grave expense of the health, wellbeing, and rights of women, including pregnant women and immigrants. This policy will undoubtedly further jeopardize the health of pregnant women in the ICE’s custody, who are already likely facing difficult conditions and need access to healthcare the most. While the Trump-Pence administration brags about its ‘pro-life’ credentials, it does not blink an eye when it comes to the lives of our most vulnerable populations.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
