NARAL Congratulates Shelley Mayer on Her Election to New York State Senate

In a victory for women and families across New York, Shelley Mayer was elected as the next State Senator to represent New York’s 37th district. NARAL backed Mayer early in her race and mobilized members, volunteers and voters across New York to turn out for the pro-choice champion on the ballot. NARAL congratulated Mayer on her win in the following statement:

“Shelley Mayer’s win is a huge victory for New York women and families and a signal that protecting and expanding reproductive freedom in the state is a top priority,” said NARAL Pro-Choice America Political Director Nicole Brener-Schmitz. “Reproductive freedom played a pivotal role in this race and Mayer’s strong pro-choice values were clearly aligned with the voters in district 37. Shelley Mayer will be a leader in ensuring that reproductive freedom and the basic rights of families across New York first.”

NARAL was an early force behind Mayer. Members and volunteers spearheaded a district wide grassroots GOTV effort, talking with thousands of voters about how Mayer has spent her career fighting for policies that protect and promote sexual and reproductive health and justice.

Mayer has spent her life’s work fighting for policies that protect and promote sexual and reproductive health and justice. Mayer currently serves as the Assembly member from the 90th District in Westchester. In the Assembly, Mayer has been an outspoken advocate for access to, and information about, comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare. She is a co-sponsor of the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act and the Reproductive Health Act. Both of these measures have repeatedly passed the Assembly only to die in the Republican controlled State Senate, making her race crucial to protecting reproductive freedom for New York women.
