In a victory for women and families across Georgia, Stacey Abrams won the state’s Democratic primary, a win in November would make her the first black female governor in our nation’s history. NARAL was an early force in the race to help send a pro-choice champion to the Governor’s Mansion.
“Today, women and families across Georgia and throughout the nation watched as Stacey Abrams made history,” said NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue. “There are few candidates whom are as qualified to lead as Stacey Abrams and have mobilized a progressive base of black women, pro-choice women, and young people, effectively writing her own road map to victory by fighting for the rights of all Georgians. Stacey proved that when you stand firm in your values, and work to unite people, you can win. We are proud to be part of her historic run and will continue to support Abrams to ensure that she claims victory on November 6th.”
“NARAL Georgia members could not be more excited to congratulate Stacey Abrams, a true champion for reproductive freedom,” said NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia State Director Laura Simmons. “Stacey Abrams has gone above and beyond in defending attacks against the basic rights and freedoms of women. We need someone with a proven record of leadership to push back against extreme agendas and put the rights of women and families first. Stacey Abrams has always been an outspoken defender of our reproductive freedom, including access to contraceptives and abortion. We know she will bring that same passion to the Governor’s Mansion and we are proud to stand with her now and through November to make history”
NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia endorsed Stacey Abrams early on and was an early voice in turning out pro-choice voters across the state with more than 35,000 contacts to voters. NARAL members made tens of thousands of calls and went door to door around the state to get out the vote for Abrams.
Stacey Abrams has spent her career standing up to extreme attacks on women’s bodies and our ability to decide what’s best for us. Abrams has fought repeated attempts to restrict healthcare access in the General Assembly, stood strong against legislation that would prohibit a woman from accessing abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, and led efforts to shut down an anti-choice bill that would ban insurance coverage for abortion.
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
