Yesterday, Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards of Louisiana signed into law a cruel and unconstitutional abortion ban. In response, NARAL Pro-Choice America National Communications Director Kaylie Hanson Long issued the following statement:
“This law is cruel, unnecessary and unconstitutional. This shameful action by the governor will put women in Louisiana at far greater risk. Louisiana is already one of the states where abortion access is most severely restricted, and this law will be a significant step towards cutting women off from care completely. While we are disappointed by the governor’s action, NARAL will continue mobilizing our members in Louisiana to demand that their legislators and Democratic governor stop pandering to anti-choice extremists and their fringe base. Louisiana women and families deserve better.”
This law is similar to unconstitutional abortion bans introduced in the U.S. Congress last year, including a bill to ban abortion at six weeks, before many women even know they are pregnant. It is part of a growing, concerning national trend aimed at undermining or overturning Roe v. Wade, and making abortion care less accessible overall.
