After the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to advance the nominations of two anti-choice judicial nominees, Patrick Wyrick and Allen Winsor, NARAL Pro-Choice America Vice President Adrienne Kimmell issued the following statement:
“The anti-choice GOP in Congress are wasting no time rushing through Donald Trump’s dangerous, biased nominees, even holding an unusual Senate session this summer to dedicate more time toward stacking the courts against women and families. It’s no coincidence that Wyrick and Winsor both have anti-choice records. As Trump and the anti-choice GOP hope, these nominees will shape the courts in their out-of-touch image for decades to come if confirmed. We urge the full Senate to reject these nominees.”
Patrick Wyrick defended two Oklahoma laws that required physicians providing medication abortion to use an outdated method that is less safe and less effective than the current standard of care, and another that required women to undergo an ultrasound before receiving abortion care, even if not medically necessary and against her will. He is also included on President Trump’s list of potential Supreme Court nominees, a list of individuals Trump promised would overturn Roe v. Wade “automatically.”
Allen Winsor defended a Florida law that requires women to wait 24 hours after receiving a state-mandated lecture before accessing abortion care and, in another case, filed an amicus brief in opposition to the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive-coverage policy, the greatest advancement in reproductive healthcare in a generation.
