This evening, Brian Kemp, an anti-choice extremist who recently received an endorsement from Donald Trump, won the GOP primary runoff, securing the party’s nomination on the ballot this November.

“If Brian Kemp thinks his support from his anti-choice base and an endorsement from Donald Trump will help him win Georgia families over, he is in for a rude awakening. Georgia women and families are fired up more than ever before and they are ready to fight for their rights, all the way to the ballot box,” said NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia State Director Laura Simmons. “Let’s be clear: Brian Kemp’s brand of extremism is not welcome in Georgia. We know that 7 in 10 Georgians believe in keeping access to abortion legal and accessible, and believe that making their own healthcare decision is their constitutional right. Georgia women and families deserve a Governor who will stand up and fight for those fundamental human rights, and that person is Stacey Abrams. Our support for Stacey Abrams runs deep, and our members are mobilized and energized to work hard to ensure that come November, she becomes our next Governor and we make it clear that when you stand strong in your values, you can win.”

“The idea that anti-choice, extreme, out-of-touch candidate Brian Kemp could somehow represent the people of Georgia is unacceptable, and speaks volumes about why it is more important than ever to go all in for Stacey Abrams,” said NARAL Pro-Choice America Political Director Nicole Brenner-Schmitz. “Kemp represents the bottom of the barrel and stands in stark contrast with our shared values, including reproductive freedom and women’s ability to be equal partners in society. Now more than ever, we need elected representatives who will fight for women and families, not work to undermine our rights.”

NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia endorsed Stacey Abrams early on and was an early voice in turning out pro-choice voters across the state to ensure that Abrams won her primary. Stacey Abrams has spent her career standing up to extreme attacks on women’s bodies and our ability to decide what’s best for us. Abrams has fought repeated attempts to restrict healthcare access in the General Assembly, stood strong against legislation that would prohibit a woman from accessing abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, and led efforts to shut down an anti-choice bill that would ban insurance coverage for abortion.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
