Last night, The People’s Defense, a grassroots coalition led by NARAL Pro-Choice America, joined with Senator Cory Booker, MoveOn, Daily Kos, and End Citizens United to hold a tele-town hall to continue organizing and mobilizing nationally to stop Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh’s record demonstrates he will be a sure-fire vote to end Roe v Wade, criminalize abortion, and punish women—a reality that requires every one of us to fight back.
Thousands of activists tuned in to sign up and get involved locally with the August 26 “Unite for Justice” national day of action, when people will rally in all 50 states to demand that their senators vote NO on Kavanaugh’s confirmation. More than 44 organizations have already signed on as partners for the national day of action, and the list is growing. The balance of the Court for decades to come is on the line, and we know what’s at stake in this fight: our most precious and fundamental rights.
“In this moment, we are called to act on behalf of our country,” said Senator Cory Booker. “Understand that like in the [threat to repeal the] Affordable Care Act, we can win. We can appeal to the conscience of senators. We can appeal to our legislators regardless of party identification. We did it before, and we can do it again.”
“This is the fight of my life,” said NARAL President Ilyse Hogue. “When Donald Trump promised to nominate someone who would end Roe, criminalize abortion, and punish women, I saw everything I have ever fought for thrown into chaos. He’s found his man in Brett Kavanaugh.”
“This is the worst-case scenario coming true, but here’s the good news: we are the majority,” said Karine Jean-Pierre, Senior Advisor to MoveOn. “The majority of Americans believe women should have the right to choose, believe that LGBTQ Americans should have equal rights, support the ACA and affirmative action, and believe voting rights are important.”
This is not a drill, it’s a five alarm threat to democracy, and NARAL’s 2 million members, alongside the tens of millions of members of partner organizations and allies, are fighting Kavanaugh’s confirmation every step of the way. We are already seeing unprecedented energy for this fight— we are organizing, we are engaged, and we are ready. We are the majority, we have momentum on our side, and this is the moment we were made for.
A large and diverse set of organizations, representing tens of millions of people, have already signed on to participate including NARAL Pro-Choice America and The People’s Defense, MoveOn, American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Center for American Progress Action Fund, Color of Change, CREDO, Daily Kos, Demand Justice, End Citizens United, Every Voice, Feminist Majority Foundation, Human Rights Campaign, Indivisible, Mainers for Accountable Leadership, Moms Rising, National Women’s Law Center, NextGen America, PCCC, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Religious Institute, Stand Up America, Ultraviolet, and the Working Families Party.
