Support for NARAL’s Ask to #CommitToRoe Continues to Grow as Candidates Join in from the Campaign Trail

With Donald Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to serve a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court, abortion rights and Roe v. Wade are in grave danger. That’s why 36 candidates running for elected office across the country have joined in for NARAL’s ask that candidates and House members #CommitToRoe and fight to make abortion legal in all 50 states if Kavanaugh is confirmed. The 36 candidates join the list of more than 100 House members who have already joined in to #CommitToRoe.
Mike Pence promised on the campaign trail that if Trump won, “We’ll see Roe v. Wade consigned to the ash heap of history where it belongs.” President Trump promised to only nominate Supreme Court justices who will work to end Roe v. Wade “automatically.” Kavanaugh was chosen because he lived up to Trump’s litmus test and will be a vote to end Roe v. Wade, criminalize abortion, and punish women.
Now, candidates and House members alike are fighting back. Support for Roe v Wade has hit historic highs—and all signs point to voters being more likely to vote for a candidate who supports a woman’s reproductive freedom than one who opposes it. Following a wave of commitment from sitting members in the House, 36 candidates and counting have joined in the commitment to abortion rights in races across the country. They stand with women and families everywhere as they #CommitToRoe and promise to fight to make abortion legal in all 50 states if Kavanaugh is confirmed.

“7 in 10 Americans believe women should have access to abortion care and be trusted to make our own decision about our own families. Yet, Donald Trump has committed to replacing Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court with a Justice who will end the landmark decision in Roe v Wade, criminalize abortion and punish women. If the Supreme Court overturns Roe v Wade, or guts the protections the decision grants, abortion could be illegal or unavailable, nationwide, as it is in so many states already. The ACA is also at stake with a Trump appointed Justice. More than 20 million Americans could lose access to healthcare, in particular people of color and low income families. If Donald Trump is successful in getting his nominee through, only Congress, through passing legislation, will be able to ensure women’s fundamental freedom to make our own personal decisions and to access to reproductive healthcare.”
Commitment: “If the Senate confirms this or any Supreme Court Justice who will end Roe v Wade, criminalize abortion, and abolish the ACA, I commit to support legislation that will make abortion available in all 50 states.”
“A vote for Brett Kavanaugh is a vote to gut Roe, criminalize abortion and punish women—PERIOD,” said NARAL Pro-Choice America Political Director Nicole Brener-Schmitz. “If Roe is overturned, women will be forced to stay pregnant, even if it risks our lives, our health, and our futures. This isn’t about politics, it is about the lives of our daughters, sisters, mothers and granddaughters. We are very pleased that candidates running for office around the country, in addition to the more than 100 House members, understand what’s at stake for the people in their districts and are making clear that they will fight for women and families if elected to office.”
Polling shows time and again that the majority of Americans support Roe v. Wade, and that overturning Roe v Wade is widely unpopular:
- Last month, a poll from NBC News/Wall Street Journalfound that support for Roe has hit an alltime high, including that 71 percent of American voters believe Roe should not be overturned, and that the majority of Republicans oppose Roe being overturned.
- Voters also say that they are more likely to vote for a political candidate who supports abortion rights rather than for one who opposes them. 44 percent of voters said they would be more likely to vote for a pro-choice candidate, while 26 percent said they would be more likely to support a candidate who backs restrictions on abortion.
- A June 2018 Kaiser Family Foundation pollshows that two thirds of Americans don’t want the Supreme Court to overturn Roe.
