Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America launched a hard-hitting new ad in Maine, featuring a two-time Susan Collins voter urging the senator to oppose Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. The six-figure ad buy will run in Maine on TV and online starting today, Friday, August 31st, and continue through the week of Kavanaugh’s Senate confirmation hearings.
The ad features Michelle Fish, a Topsham, Maine, resident sharing her abortion story and why she feels Senator Collins, whom she has voted for twice, holds the key vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination to protect women’s rights. Thirty years ago, at the age of 18, Michelle was in a violent, abusive relationship when she found out she was pregnant. As she tells the story, Michelle made the decision to have an abortion rather than raise a child in a violent household.
Now a married mother of two daughters and an independent voter, Michelle says that she doesn’t think she can vote for Collins again if Collins votes to confirm anti-choice Kavanaugh.
You can see the ad here. The ad campaign will run on TV in Maine as well as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Google search ads in each state.
“In the time since this nomination was announced, I have spent a lot of time talking to people from every corner of Maine, including our over 10,000 members in the state,” said NARAL President Ilyse Hogue. “They echo what Michelle says so powerfully: a vote for Brett Kavanaugh is a vote to gut Roe v. Wade and criminalize abortion. We’re seeing women like Michelle courageously come forward for the first time in their lives because they know that nothing less than our fundamental freedoms are at stake in this fight.”
“I’m sharing my story for the first time publicly because I see the grave danger facing my daughters and my country if the Senate confirms Brett Kavanaugh to a seat on the Supreme Court,” said Michelle Fish. “I am respectfully asking Senator Collins to stand up for me and fellow Mainers who want to see Roe v. Wade protected. President Trump made it clear that his Supreme Court nominee would end Roe v. Wade and punish women. I hope Senator Collins will choose to put Maine women and families before her political party”
