Nevadans Oppose Senator Heller Voting to Confirm SCOTUS Nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Will Hold Him Accountable This November for a “Yes” Vote
New Poll Shows Nevada Voters Want to Protect Roe V. Wade and Affordable Care Act
A new Nevada poll, conducted on behalf of NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund by Clarity Campaign Labs, finds that the majority of Nevada voters do not want to see Roe v. Wade overturned or the Affordable Care Act repealed. Nevadans overwhelmingly indicated they do not want Senator Dean Heller to vote to confirm anti-choice nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who is on record saying the Supreme Court can “always overrule precedent” and questions Roe as “settled law.”
“Newsflash, Senator Heller: your constituents will hold you accountable in November if you vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. They know what’s at stake with Kavanaugh on the court: the future of Roe v. Wade, abortion access, and affordable health care for all Nevadans,” said NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada State Director Caroline Mello Roberson. “If Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed, abortion will be criminalized and women will be punished. A ‘yes’ vote for Kavanaugh means a ‘no’ vote for Senator Heller in November. He should think long and hard about that in the coming weeks.”
“Senator Heller continues to sell out Nevada’s women. The Supreme Court remains one of the last defenses for the protection of safe and legal abortion and countless other rights that Americans have fought long and hard for,” said Executive Director of Nevada Advocates for Planned Parenthood Lindsey Harmon. “It should not be another venue for political theater. Nevadans are demanding more from our elected officials. Senator Heller needs to remember that he works for us and the will of Nevadans is clear — we support upholding Roe vs Wade and a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions. We hope that Heller is listening.”
Key highlights from the poll include:
If Senator Heller votes to confirm Kavanaugh, he will suffer the consequences in November. Nevadans made clear they will hold Senator Heller accountable for his vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination.
- Forty-four percent would view Senator Heller less favorably if he voted for an anti-ACA nominee, with only ten percent viewing him more favorably. Nevada voters would also view Senator Heller less favorably by 31 points if he voted for an anti-Roe nominee. (45 percent compared to 14 percent).
Voters want members of Congress to support women’s constitutional rights, including abortion.
- Fifty-six percent of Nevada voters are more likely to support a candidate for Congress who supports women’s rights, compared to only eleven percent who prefer to support candidates who oppose those rights.
- A strong majority of Nevadans support access to safe, legal abortion. Seventy-four percent of voters do not want to see Roe v. Wade overturned.
Nevada voters strongly support current ACA protections, which prohibit insurance companies from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, or pregnancy. In fact, 82 percent believe the Supreme Court should keep those protections in place.
- Nevadans also oppose the Supreme Court ruling against the Affordable Care Act as a whole, with 49 percent opposed to overturning the ACA.
- When voters hear about Kavanaugh’s likely positions on protections for people with pre-existing conditions, they are less likely to support him by 25 points.
