NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of Ilhan Omar in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
“Ilhan Omar has been a champion for Minnesota women and families, and we are proud to endorse her,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Throughout her long career as a dedicated public servant, most recently in the Minnesota State House, Omar as been a passionate fighter for reproductive freedom and we know we can trust her to bring that fight to Congress. We are thrilled to support her and look forward to her victory this November.”
“Since first running for the Minnesota legislature, Ilhan Omar has centered her work to advance reproductive justice,” said Andrea Ledger executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota. “We need her strong voice in Washington to advocate for Minnesota women and families and we are excited to endorse her campaign for Congress.”
“I’m proud to be endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice America and will be by their side as we fight to protect women’s reproductive freedom,” said Rep. Omar. “When elected to Congress, I will be a strong advocate to ensure continued access to contraception and abortion coverage, regardless of income or insurance.”
Ilhan Omar has dedicated her life to public service. In 2016, she was elected to the Minnesota State House as the first Muslim Somali-American legislator in the United States. Prior to that, she served as the Assistant Minority Leader, Vice President of the Minneapolis NAACP and worked as a senior Policy Aide for a Minneapolis City Council Member. Omar has moved to eliminate the Hyde Amendment and worked to provide abortion care coverage for all. She has a consistent pro-choice voting record in the Minnesota House, voting against bills that require ultrasounds prior to an abortion and add medically unnecessary licensing requirements to abortion facilities.
