For Immediate Release: October 3, 2018
NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) for re-election to U.S. Senate representing Maine.
“Angus King has shown himself to be a true advocate for women and families across the state of Maine,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “As we have seen with the recent Supreme Court fight, it is more important than ever that Mainers are represented by someone who understands the importance of supporting and fighting for women and our fundamental freedoms. Angus is a proven champion for reproductive freedom and we are proud to endorse him.”
“A woman’s most sensitive health care decisions should be made between her and her health care provider,” Senator King said. “But today, we still see constant attempts to undermine the rights of women and their choices about their health and their body. That’s why it is so important we keep working to ensure family planning options remain accessible and legal and combat harmful restrictions that threaten access to women’s health care options. I am honored to have the support of NARAL and will continue to work on behalf of what is fair and what is just — the right to choose.”
Angus King was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012 as Maine’s first Independent Senator. He notably serves on the Armed Services Committee, where he has been called one of the most serious and hard-working members of the committee. Before running for Senate, King served for two terms as the Governor of Maine. During his first term in the U.S. Senate, Senator King has worked to support women’s health initiatives and help women receive the care they need. In September 2015, Senator King opposed the advancement of a government spending bill that would block patients from Planned Parenthood health centers. In March 2017, Senator King took to the Senate floor to urge his Senate colleagues to oppose a resolution stripped protections from Title X centers. The Title X grant program is the nation’s premier family planning program, and is dedicated to helping people with low incomes access family planning and preventative health services. The program supports more than 40 health care centers in Maine, which serve an estimated 20,000 people.
