NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of Ayanna Pressley in Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District.
“The fight for reproductive rights has never been more important or vital, and it is crucial that Massachusetts be represented by a strong pro-choice leader who will protect reproductive healthcare for women and families. That’s why NARAL is so proud to endorse Ayanna Pressley,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Ayanna has always been a steadfast champion for Massachusetts women, and she’s exactly who they need in this moment. We’ll do everything we can do help her win in November.”
“I am honored to have the support of NARAL. I have dedicated my life to fighting for the rights of women and girls – including the right to access safe, respectful reproductive health care,” Pressley said. “Now, perhaps more than at any time since the passage of Roe, we need representatives in Congress who will fight to protect a woman’s right to choose. We must build a movement to resist the daily assaults on the rights of women, and I am proud to stand with NARAL – and all advocates – in this work.”
Pressley is currently serving as an at-large member of the Boston City Council in Boston, Massachusetts. She is the first woman of color elected to the council and would be the first woman of color to hold to federal office in Massachusetts. Pressley is the 2018 Democratic nominee for Massachusetts’s 7th congressional district. She worked as a senior aide for Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy II and later Senator John Kerry, and went on to make history as the first woman of color ever elected to the Boston City Council in 2009. As a city councilor, Pressley founded the Committee on Women & Healthy Communities, which focuses on issues unique to girls and women and addresses community destabilization. She has worked tirelessly to help women and girls achieve self-sufficiency and equality, and she is a pro-choice champion. Pressley is a survivor of sexual assault and a powerful advocate for all survivors of violence and abuse.
NARAL’s political program for the 2018 general election is the organization’s largest ever midterm political program to advance candidates fighting for “our values, our future, our vote.” NARAL is investing in diverse candidates up and down the ballot in 19 states, mobilizing members and voters through mail, phones, digital ads, door to door canvassing, TV ads, and rallies that hold anti-choice candidates accountable and lift up pro-choice champions.
