After Senate Republicans held a hearing on anti-choice judicial nominees Wendy Williams Berger and Allison Jones Rushing, despite the Senate being in recess and a unanimous request from Committee Democrats to postpone, NARAL Pro-Choice America Vice President Adrienne Kimmell released the following statement:
“Senate Republicans continue to shatter every norm and bend every rule in order to stack the courts with anti-choice judges. For the first time ever, at the order of Mitch McConnell, the Senate will ram through Trump’s judicial nominations despite the Senate being in recess and unanimous Democratic opposition. They’ve thrown Congressional norms out the window in their determination to pack our courts with biased, unqualified nominees like Williams Berger and Jones Rushing. The anti-choice GOP has turned our democratic process into a mockery in an attempt to solidify their brutal agenda into our judiciary for decades to come, and now women and families will be left to pay the price for generations.”
Wendy Williams Berger’s anti-choice views are so extreme that as a lawyer, she attempted to use a woman’s history of accessing abortion as evidence against her in a manslaughter trial. She has also used anti-choice language in her rulings, and is a member of the Federalist Society.
Allison Jones Rushing was a legal intern for the Alliance Defending Freedom, a designated hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, and remains closely involved with the group. Rushing was also an avid supporter of Neil Gorsuch’s Supreme Court nomination, and clerked for anti-choice Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
