NARAL Condemns Martha McSally’s Appointment to U.S. Senate

For Immediate Release: December 18, 2018

In response to Martha McSally’s appointment to the U.S. Senate today to replace Jon Kyl, NARAL Pro-Choice America Political Director Nicole Brener-Schmitz released the following statement:

“Martha McSally proved during her unsuccessful 2018 Senate bid that she is out of step with the 7 in 10 Arizonans who believe that women, not politicians, have the right to decide if, when, and how to start a family. Kyrsten Sinema prevailed over McSally this November after creating a campaign around lifting up women and families and fighting to preserve and expand their fundamental rights and freedoms. The appointment of McSally to the Senate shows the true colors of the GOP who prioritize their extremist anti-choice agenda over the wishes of voters. NARAL and our members across Arizona will be there to hold McSally accountable at every turn.”

Martha McSally has historically supported a harmful agenda for Arizona women:

  • McSally voted to block her own constituents from care at women’s health clinics like Planned Parenthood. She voted to defund Planned Parenthood at least fifteen times.
  • McSally repeatedly voted to limit a woman’s right to choose, including supporting a ban on abortion even in instances of rape or incest.
  • McSally opposed requiring health care coverage for contraception.
  • McSally has repeatedly promised to break with her own party to support equal pay for women, but has voted to block consideration of the Paycheck Fairness Act. McSally even voted to make it harder for women who experienced wage discrimination to take action in court.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
